๐Ÿ›ก Chat Safety

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Yakk is an adults-only community, and keeping it that way takes active work. Here's how moderation works and what you can do to stay safe.

18+ only, enforced

Everyone who joins confirms they are 18 or older, and age is collected and checked again on the join form โ€” under-18s are blocked from entering. Accounts and content involving anyone under 18 are removed with zero tolerance and may be reported to authorities.

Automatic moderation

Every room message passes through automatic filters before anyone sees it:

  • Slur filter โ€” blocks hate speech, including common evasions like leetspeak, repeated letters, and separator tricks.
  • Spam detection โ€” catches repeated messages, caps floods, link floods, and emoji floods.
  • Strike escalation โ€” 1โ€“2 strikes: the message is blocked with a private warning; 3 strikes: 10-minute mute; 4 strikes: 1-hour mute; 5+: 24-hour mute. Strikes expire after 24 hours. Auto-mutes are announced in the room so everyone knows the rules are real.

Human moderators

The site owner and appointed moderators can mute, kick, or ban any nickname or account, and remove any content, with or without warning. If someone is harassing you, spamming, or breaking the rules in a way the filters missed, that's what mods are for.

How to report a problem

  • In chat: flag it to a moderator in the room, or note the nickname, room, and time.
  • By email: write to contact@yakk.app with details. Reports about harassment, hate speech, or underage users are prioritized.

Protecting yourself

  • Room messages are public โ€” anyone in the room can read them. Never post your real name, address, phone number, or photos you wouldn't want shared.
  • DMs are ephemeral โ€” private messages aren't stored by us, but they pass through our servers. Never share passwords, financial details, or other sensitive information in chat.
  • Strangers are strangers. Random Chat pairs you with people you don't know. Keep personal details to yourself until โ€” and unless โ€” you genuinely trust someone.
  • You can always leave. In Random Chat, /next skips to someone new instantly. In any room, you can close the tab; nobody can follow you.
